Odiorne Point, 2016

Acrylic on canvas, 3' x 2'

We feel a pull towards bodies of water because we have an innate need for the resources they provide. Bodies of water are restorative and transformative. They are churning and ever changing, and have the ability to wash away dirt, sins and infrastructure. Their immensity makes mighty humans feel small, worries seem insignificant, and life seem fleeting. For these reasons, bodies of water appeal to me as a subject matter. The complete abstraction of my own waterscape photographs left me with organic shapes that convey the essence of the particular locations, even though the images are no longer recognizable. The colors I chose reflect not only the physical characteristics of a place, but also the feelings and sensory experiences that I associate with a place. Through this body of work, I examine how abstract shape and color work together to evoke the feelings experienced when standing on a shore looking out.
